The RHD is an extremely accurate and robust rain gauge with no moving parts and is therefore completely maintenance-free. It detects changes in acoustic pressure caused by the impact of raindrops or hailstones. A distinction is also made between rain or hail. In addition to the rain and hail intensity data, the distrometer function also provides information about the drop size distribution.

It uses very little energy and is therefore suitable for feeding via a small solar panel or battery pack, making it very interesting for field applications as fruit growers or windmill farms.

The RHD in the wind industry

The impact of heavy precipitation or hail on the leading edge of wind turbine blades can extremely shorten the lifespan of the blade. The most important factors to damage the leading edge are: speed of the leaf, rain intensity, droplet size of rain or hail. To reduce the erosion of the leading edge of the leaf and to save money in the long term, it is important to monitor the precipitation and the drop size, to be able to adjust the speed or direction of the blades in time when necessary.
