BioPharma - Filtration - Turbidity Measurement

Whatever type of filtration is involved, the aim is always to filter out smaller particles (down to molecular level) from a liquid phase. The membranes are often expensive and fragile. Advance checks are therefore certainly justified.

Turbidity

By measuring the turbidity with an inline turbidity meter before the actual filtration, we can prevent premature blocking of the membranes. The turbidity meter detects the scattering of a light beam at a defined angle.

Conductivity

A conductivity meter is mainly used for checking cleaning (CIP) and rinsing. The alkaline products of the CIP have a high conductivity. Therefore, an inductive or 4-electrode sensor is recommended here. To check the efficiency of the rinsing after the CIP, it’s best to choose a 2-electrode conductivity sensor that accurately measures in the very low measuring range. Choose a digital version if it is really important.

pH

Alkaline products are used for CIP cleaning. A pH measurement is the most suitable for making sure that the rinse water is completely clean. Choose an electrode that can withstand high NaOH concentrations and high temperatures, but also gives good results in ultrapure water at the same time.
