Food & Beverages - Wastewater valorisation
Typically, in various sectors of the food industry, wastewater still has a high nutritional value. This is measured in COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand). In other sectors or in public wastewater treatment plants, the COD value is too low to achieve good purification.
The food companies sell their wastewater as a carbon source. Food for the bacteria of the treatment plant, so to speak. Naturally, the customer would like to be sure of the quality of the COD-rich water. And therefore it has to be measured.
Brix measurement
The COD in the wastewater comes mainly from products containing sugar. The amount of sugar in water is measured in Brix. The best way to measure Brix values is with a refractometer. It can be installed in a pipe or storage tank.
Turbidity measurement
In some cases, the organic load of the wastewater flow can be deduced from its turbidity. A simple turbidity meter is sufficient in this case.
