    In a laboratory where purity and the prevention of cross-contamination are critical, selecting the right laminar flow cabinet plays a key role. Regardless of whether you are working on microscopic cell cultures, sensitive PCR tests, or R&D processes, your choice between horizontal or vertical airflow directly affects efficiency, safety and reliability.

    Depending on airflow orientation, we can distinguish two main types of laminar flow cabinets: the vertical flow cabinet and the horizontal flow cabinet. The primary difference between vertical and horizontal configurations is, of course, the direction in which air flows through the cabinet. Clean air flows either vertically or horizontally, but what are the practical advantages for the user?

    Vertical airflow – the safe (and flexible) choice for large-scale or fine work

    Vertical flow cabinets draw air from above, through an H14 HEPA filter, downwards across the work surface, then exhaust part of this air while recirculating the remainder.

    Advantages:

    • Ideal for bulky equipment: large instruments such as pipetting stations are less likely to disrupt the airflow.
    • Better protection against powders or fine particles: these are directed downwards in a controlled manner, not directly towards the user.
    • Less rear workspace obstruction, as filters are mounted overhead.

    Naturally, vertical flow cabinets are available in multiple variants, which we can tailor to your specific project requirements.

    Horizontal airflow – ideal for delicate or rapid procedures

    Horizontal flow cabinets deliver air from the rear wall (via an H14 HEPA filter) parallel across the work surface towards the user.

    Advantages:

    • Minimal turbulence across the work surface—perfect for delicate procedures such as micro-electronics assembly or sensitive pipetting.
    • Your hands remain behind the airflow, reducing the risk of sample contamination.
    • Improved visibility and accessibility: you benefit from an unobstructed view, comfortable access and ergonomic working conditions.

    Both laminar flow solutions create a controlled, clean working environment for your samples, but your choice depends on the nature of your planned activities. If you work with large equipment or fine powders, vertical airflow is your best option. For more delicate, rapidly executed procedures requiring optimal visibility and accessibility, the horizontal variant is ideal.
