Traditional 2D cell culture models have been essential for decades, yet they often fail to capture the complexity of real biological systems. In living tissues, cells interact in three dimensions, forming structured environments with multiple cell types and dynamic cell-cell interactions.

During this 3D Cell Culture Day, you will discover how 3D cell culture models such as spheroids and organoids enable researchers to better mimic physiological conditions and gain more relevant insights into disease mechanisms, drug responses and tissue behaviour.

    3D cell culture: importance, basic techniques and nomenclature

    Culturing cells outside of their natural environment in a laboratory under controlled conditions is essential to scientific research with the 2D cell culture method being established over a century ago. However, 2D cell culture, although extremely valuable, has its limitations in answering more complex biological questions. This led to the development of the 3D cell culture methodology which often provides more accurate and physiologically relevant tissue models. During this seminar we will be presenting:

    • Benefits of 3D versus traditional cell culture technologies.
    • Different 3D cell culture techniques.
    • 3D cell culture, nomenclature and different structures.
  • 3D Cell Culture - Spheroids - Corning

    Spheroid culture: step-by-step workflow and scientific applications

    When it comes to mimicking human disease, traditional 2D cell culture and animal models are often inadequate and limited in their physiological relevance. Cells grown in 3D more closely mimic in vivo behavior in tissues and organs. In recent years, three-dimensional (3D) cell culture models have emerged as the preferred in vitro cancer model as they better mimic the in vivo tumor microenvironment. For instance, 3D cultures, specifically spheroids, develop hypoxic cores and demonstrate gradients of soluble factors and a diffusion profile for drugs like solid tumors. During this seminar we will discuss the following topics:

    • Spheroid culture and techniques to obtain these structures.
    • Recommendations and optimization during 3D spheroid culture.
    • Application of Corning products in 3D spheroid culture to answer biological questions.
  • 3D Cell Culture - Organoids - Corning

    Organoid Culture

    Countless medical breakthroughs over the past century have begun with two-dimensional (2D) cell culture models. However, the limitations of 2D culture are obvious as cells, tissues and organs exist in three dimensions, and tissues almost always consist of more than one cell type with their own spatial organization and function. By providing greater physiological relevance, 3D cultures narrow the bridge between in vitro and live-animal or human assays. In this scenario, organoids show promise for their physiologic-like complexity, as they capture the spatial organization of heterogeneous tissue-specific cells, cell-cell interactions, cell-matrix interactions, and certain in vivo physiological functions generated by tissue-specific cells (which contain adult stem cells). During this seminar we will discuss:

    • Organoid Biology, how to obtain organoids and their relevance.
    • Key Corning products for organoid culture.
    • Major optimization steps of organoid culture.
    • Application of Corning products in Organoid culture to answer biological complex questions.

Lotte Hiddingh joined Corning Life Sciences in 2019 and is part of the EMEA Scientific Support team, based in Amsterdam. In her role as Scientific Support Specialist, she is responsible to provide scientific and technical support to Corning Life Sciences customers. She obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences at Utrecht University and a Master’s degree in Oncology at VU University Amsterdam (both in the Netherlands) and holds a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences from VU University Amsterdam. She is fluent in Dutch and English.

Stéphanie Metzger

Scientific Support Specialist
Corning Life Sciences
Stéphanie joined Corning Life Science in 2020 as a Scientific Support Specialist, focusing on helping researchers select the right products for their applications, develop and improve experimental setups, obtain technical documentation, and troubleshoot issues.
She obtained her Ph.D. in Bioengineering from EPFL, Switzerland, with a focus in 3D cell culture and regenerative tissue engineering. She is fluent in English, French and German.

Please note: To ensure an optimal hands-on experience and provide as many companies as possible with the opportunity to participate, registration is limited to a maximum of two participants per company. This allows for smaller, more interactive groups and encourages knowledge-sharing across different organizations.
